2012-01 January Report

Dolau W.I. January 2012 Report

A highly entertaining and useful evening was organised for the December meeting. Members were joined by a number of friends and supporters who thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas demonstrations by Kath Nixon and Glenda Lawrence. Kath showed us three beautiful Christmas table centre decorations using a mixture of fresh and dried flower material and incorporating traditional and modern styles. It was very helpful coming at just the right time and we were fired with confidence to go away and try them for ourselves. Glenda demonstrated several examples of Christmas cake icing which we would also be able to put to use at home. She showed us quick skills using ribbon and icing, glitter and colour to produce stunning effects. Glenda very kindly donated a beautiful Christmas cake decorated with ivy and Christmas roses in sugar paste for our raffle.

During the business part of our meeting we voted on resolutions for the 2012 conference on a wide range of environmental and medical concerns. We reported on the successful quiz night and carol evening with the Powys W.I. choir community singing and W.I.sketches. We planned a Christmas dinner at The Hundred House Bleddfa and charity carol singing in the run up to Christmas. We looked forward to a range of workshops and day trips in the spring and made a presentation of the Competition cup for the year to Colette Gwynne.

On the Monday before Christmas as usual members and friends gathered for carol singing around Dolau. It was a beautiful mild evening unlike last year’s big freeze and the welcome around the houses was also very warm. We finished the evening with mulled wine and refreshments kindly hosted by Elsbeth Vipond at Station Cottage. Over £160 was raised by generous donation in aid of ‘The Bracken Trust’ local Cancer charity.

We enjoyed meeting up again at our January meeting and catching up with the various happenings over the Christmas period.  There was little business this month and we were soon able to welcome Mr George Scarfe, Mr Harvey Jones and Stephen and Elsbeth Vipond who were to give a presentation on the ‘Heart of Wales line’.  Because of the local interest, this was an ‘open’ evening and we were joined by many guests, so much so, that finally there was standing room only!  We were not disappointed; Mr Scarfe started the presentation by giving us a detailed, and very interesting, account of the history of the line over many years and up to the present day.  Mr Jones then provided a railway film show he had taken over the years, showing special events at nearby stations, and special trains passing through our part of the world, including the ‘Orient Express’.  The presentation finished with Stephen and Elsbeth giving some background information on the work done by a dedicated band of volunteers who have enabled Dolau Station to be awarded many prizes over the years for the way in which it is kept and the beautiful floral displays throughout the year.  They also shared with us a wonderful scrapbook which included many pictures of special occasions at Dolau station, the highlight being the visit by Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh on their Jubilee Tour.  It was a really enjoyable evening – which ended with everybody socialising and relishing the refreshments provided.
