2012-03 March Report

March 2012 – Dolau W.I. Report

We celebrated St David’s Day on 6th March appropriately with Welsh music from our visiting speaker –  local singer / songwriter Gareth Phillips. Gareth spoke in general about his music career. He performs his own contemporary folk music written predominantly in Welsh – his mother tongue. He has published CDs, performed in pubs, folk clubs, on S4C’s Noson Lawen and on Radio Cymru.

Gareth played acoustic guitar and sang of dreams of home “Ahosyn yn y gwenydd gwyn”. He brought along all the guitars he could find and the evening gained complexity and humour when three members were given guitars to join in playing chords.

Gareth’s electric guitar came out for him to layer over the top and what had sounded like a cacophony turned into the National Anthem. We then joined in more chords and discovered new talent and comedy within the WI membership. The game was Name the Tune and it turned out to be Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door. Gareth provided hands on entertainment in a relaxed and friendly manner  and was thanked by the President Julie Hardwick before we all enjoyed the icing on the cake – a delightfully appropriate taste of Wales supper provided by Wendy and Ann.

Forthcoming meetings:

4th April:   Val Lymer – History of Quilting

2nd May:    Susanne Davies – Cookery demostration

We meet in Dolau Community Hall at 7.30 and visitors are always most welcome.  If you would like any additional information, please telephone Julie Hardwick on 851256 or Colette Gwynne on 851050.

The WI providing all kinds of opportunity for all kinds of women.
