2012-06 June Report

Dolau W.I. visits Mangar International

For our June meeting the members of Dolau W.I. ventured further afield on a visit which was of technical, local and social interest. We drove to the headquarters of Mangar International at its industrial units on the business park in Presteigne. There we were greeted by a team of technical experts who were both welcoming and informative about their work. The managing director Andrew gave us a powerpoint presentation outlining their products, world market, manufacturing in South Wales and £6M turnover.

Mangar Aids” was started thirty years ago in Dolau by David and Fran Garman of Lower Penfhiw beginning from home with the “invention” of a bath-lift. After winning a prestigious television award manufacture and sales soon outgrew the space and the first industrial unit was opened in Presteigne. From there the business grew rapidly. The company now provides seven mobility related lifting products and servicing. Their bath lifts and cushions are sold both privately and to social services, retirement homes and hospitals.

More recent additions – The Elk and The Camel – are battery or air compressor powered lifting cushions and chairs for sitting up and lifting a fallen person from the floor. These are used extensively throughout Britain by emergency services and care homes and Mangar International also has offices in Germany and Australia developing sales worldwide.

W.I. ladies were treated to a demonstration of the various aids for bathing, moving and handling by technical and sales staff Andrew, Paul and Andrea. It was both instructional and entertaining and to finish we were allowed to try them out for ourselves – the photographs are censored!

We all enjoyed tea and cakes together at the end in spite of our raised level of concern about the challenges of mobility we face in old age. Our secretary Colette Gwynne gave thanks to the staff for such a wonderful reception and pleasant evening.

Forthcoming meetings:

4th July :   Janet Dwyer – Jewellery Demonstration – visitors welcome

8th August :  Trip to be confirmed

We meet in Dolau Community Hall at 7.30 and visitors are always most welcome.  If you would like any additional information, please telephone Julie Hardwick on 851256 or Colette Gwynne on 851050.
