2012-09 September 2012 Report

Dolau WI September 2012 Report

A quick update;  the much looked forward to Jewellery Demonstration and Workshop in July by Janet Dwyer did not take place as Janet was unable to join us, we hope that we can re-book her for another evening.  It was decided that rather than scrabble around to find a speaker who was available at the last minute, we would all enjoy a social evening together – this we did, in earnest, helped along by some absolutely delicious refreshments!

August is always a ‘different’ WI month, and this year we had a walk on Wapley Hill, followed by supper at Mistletoe Cottage, Coomb (open in the evening by arrangement).  This was a really enjoyable evening, the weather was kind to us and those of us who had not previously visited Mistletoe Cottage were in for a real treat; a delightful Tea Shop/Arts and Crafts Gallery serving delicious food.  We will be going back!

Our September ‘meeting’ took the form of a visit Far Hall, Dolau, home to Jason and Julienne Braham.  Jason and Julienne are a most talented couple; Jason is a wonderful potter and Julienne a gifted artist.  After a lovely welcome to their home, the evening commenced with Jason giving us a brief history of pottery from medieval times to the present day; we then visited his studio where he gave us a demonstration of his art by ‘throwing’ a vase, a jug, a plate and even a teapot.  It was enthralling to watch the skill being demonstrated as from an uninspiring lump of clay the various items appeared – perfect every time!  Jason was kind enough to let one of us ‘have a go’ and under his supervision, a couple of very credible pots appeared!  A gallery visit was next on the agenda, when wonderful items of pottery and painting were available for sale – definitely a place to remember with Christmas around the corner for truly unique presents!  We then made our way back to the house to enjoy ‘real’ tea (served in a pot made by Jason), in mugs (made by Jason) accompanied by delicious cakes – made by Julienne!  To crown our evening, we were then treated to a tour of their wonderful home so that those who had not visited before had a chance to see the superb wall panelling and carvings in some of the rooms.  All in all, a truly memorable evening; many thanks to Jason and Julienne for their warm welcome and hospitality.

Forthcoming meetings:

3rd October:  Joanne Westlake will be talking about her Soap-making business and demonstrating making ‘bath bombs’!

7th November:  AGM following by Seasonal Food tasting session provided by Leon’s Delicatessen, Presteigne.

Our meetings are held in Dolau Community Hall and start at 7.30pm; visitors are always more than welcome.  If you have any queries please contact Julie on 01597 851256 or Colette on 851050.

The WI – all kinds of opportunities for all kinds of women.
