2012-10 October 2012 Report

Dolau WI Report : October 2012

The October meeting of Dolau WI was the first regular meeting for a while, so members enjoyed getting together again and catching up with the news.  The business part of the evening was swiftly dealt with including discussion about the items in the Federation Newsletter which included a ‘Taste of Christmas’ evening; Chinese auction; craft workshops; Christmas concert; food safety course; garden centre visit and more besides!  We had also received invitations to a quiz in Howey and a fashion show, with pudding and punch, in Knighton.

We were then delighted to welcome Jo Westlake from Mill Cottage Soap, Crossgates who was our speaker/demonstrator for the evening.  Jo gave us some background history on her career to date; amongst other things she had trained and worked both in the police force and as a nurse in the NHS and she had also been a keep fit instructor for a while – obviously a talented lady!  At present she is running a very successful business – Mill Cottage Soap – and regularly shows at craft fairs in Ludlow and Hereford.  This year she had a stand at the RWS, is about to attend a prestigious fashion and beauty event in Cheltenham and will be having a stall in the Christmas Market at Cardiff – we felt very lucky that she was able to fit in a visit to Dolau!  Jo arranged a superb display of many of her products which are all natural handmade soaps and bath products, made from high quality natural ingredients.  Jo told us about the mixing, making and ‘curing’ of her soaps, all of which are hand cut and hand wrapped. It was fascinating to learn about the process and the many different ingredients used to give the varied smells and colours – cinnamon, lemon, lime, ginger, geranium, lavender being just a few.  Jo demonstrated making bath ’bombs’ and made the process look very easy.  We were delighted to be presented with one of these, and samples of her soaps, to take home!

We all then enjoyed each others company over a delicious WI supper.

7th November:  AGM – following by Food Tasting Evening provided by Presteigne Delicatessen.

5th December:  Jane Adams demonstrating Christmas floral arrangements.
