2013-06 June Report

Dolau WI – June 2013 Report

Over the last couple of months Dolau WI has had a very varied and interesting programme, and new members have been welcomed.

At our April meeting twelve members travelled to Ten Green Bottles in New Radnor, a company working with the local community recycling glass sourced from the surrounding area.   We enjoyed a “hands on” tour and workshop where we took turns in soldering and completing a small decoration which we were able to keep.  We were shown how to cut glass, how the machinery and kilns were put to use – a very interesting and enjoyable evening.

At our May meeting we welcomed Mr & Mrs Gareth Davies from Llandrindod.  Gareth gave a very informative and interesting talk on bee keeping ably assisted by his wife Tessa who was in charge of the slide show.  We welcomed others from the Community who came to listen because of their interest in the subject.  We all learned a lot about bees and were able to enjoy some samples of honey.  There was a lot of information that Gareth did not have time to tell us so hopefully he will be able to come back to give us another talk.

At our June meeting, members travelled to the Bracken Trust in Llandrindod, a Macmillan Information and Support Centre which we all found a very warm and inviting place .  The centre offers information, therapy and quiet areas where patients can relax and talk.  Mrs Mia Ellis welcomed us and talked about all the support that is given to patients and their carers.  She also told us how it had started and that one of the reasons was that there was no where for patients to go to in between their treatments which were outside the County.    We were then able to look around the rooms and felt that we were very lucky that such a place was in our vicinity.

A team of four went to the Radnorshire WI quiz and were very pleased to come 6th overall and will now go forward to take part in the Powys WI quiz.
