2013-07 Summer Report

Dolau WI – Summer 2013 Report

Members have enjoyed a busy summer period.     In July we visited Midway Nurseries where Dave Holt gave a talk on  “Everything you need to know about orchids”.   Dave gave us some top tips for caring for orchids, and showed us how to re-pot the plants, and also information on the rarer species.   He showed us his collection of orchids many of which had travelled with him from Austria.

We had a walk along the Hergest Ridge near Kington for our August meeting.  The weather was good and we enjoyed some lovely views along the ridge.   This was followed by a meal at the Red Lion, Llanfihangel-Nant-Melan where we were joined by family and friends.   Members also entered the display competition at the Knighton Show.  The theme was “Farmers Market” and we gained 3rd place out of 8 entries.

In September Grant Powell demonstrated how to prepare and dress lobsters and crabs.  Not only did he let us in on top tips and chef secrets he also prepared delicious dishes of Lobster Thermidore, Goan Lobster Curry and Crab Cakes for us to taste – a very entertaining evening enjoyed by all.

Congratulations were given to Gill Holt who won the Jean Woosnam Silver Plate for her short story at the Federation Poetry and Prose evening.

The next meeting will be held on 2nd October when we will have a presentation from the Shelter Box Charity.
