2015-06 Spring Report

Dolau WI spring time news

Over the last few months Dolau WI members have been treated to some very enjoyable evenings provided by creative and knowledgeable local people.

At the March meeting Jo Ordonez from Dolau, gave an informative talk and power point presentation on how she set up her own company, Earthbound Organics, making and selling her own skincare products from sourced organic products. She has been inspired by the natural world, especially Wales and all products are hand made in her workshop, using herbs, beeswax, floral waters and essential oils.  She sells to the public from her home or via her web site and has many international clients. Jo brought along a large selection of her creams and gels for members to sample and test, with the opportunity to purchase as well.

The competition, handmade invitation card was won by Chris Haslock.

At the April meeting the Dolau WI team came 2nd in the recent Dolau Mixtures quiz, and Barbara Shelton, Chris Jones, Janet Tully and Jenny Bowman were congratulated.

The business meeting then followed with a ‘hands-on’ fabric brooch-making workshop provided by Jayne Davies.  Jayne had provided everything the members needed for making three different brooches.  With her help and encouragement, all members completed one of the brooches, and then resolved to complete the other two at home.

In May Hillary Shepherd from Llanwrthwl gave a talk about an extremely rural village in Spain, where both she and her husband own a house. The remoteness of the village, the stunning scenery and the way of life of the villagers were brought to life by Hillary’s commentary and photos.

The competition of a holiday souvenir was won by Debra Coombs.

At the June meeting members were told of the Radnor Federation walk , which is to be hosted by Dolau on Sunday 5th July. Ann Powell and Wendy Duggan will be organising the walk.

On the 2nd June two members from Dolau, Debra Coombs and Jenny Bowman attended the WI Royal Garden party at Buckingham Palace. Jenny was so inspired by the event that she had written a poem describing the day’s events and shared it with the meeting.

Chair, Heather Lewis congratulated all participants in the County Show, held at Knighton on 9th May – the overall placing for Dolau was 4th and there were some excellent results.

Christine Haslock received 1st prize for her painting ‘Centenary’; the painting is to be displayed at the Victorian Festival Exhibition at the Metropole on 22nd August. Chris also won 1st prize for her box of sweets. The Rose Bowl competition – Julie Hardwick gained a 1st prize for the floral arrangement, and Dolau is the 1st WI to win this new trophy donated by Rebe Brick, former County Chair. The Brecon Cup was also won by Julie Hardwick and Julie will represent the Radnor Federation in this competition at the RWAS in July.

The meeting then followed with an incredibly skilled Naomi Joy, demonstrating the art of ‘silver smithing’. Her company Njoy Jewellery makes beautiful individual pieces of jewellery and pictures in 9ct gold and sterling silver; she also offers courses in silver jewellery making. She lives locally and jewellery can be viewed on her web site www.njoyjewellery.webs.com

The competition, a favourite piece of jewellery was won by Jenny Bowman. The evening ended with members enjoying refreshments of  NFWI Centenary cheese and biscuits. The next meeting will be held on July 1st when Jennifer Lewis will give a talk on ‘Discovering your family history’, new members and visitors are welcome to attend.
