2015-11 November Report

Dolau WI November 2015 News

Dolau WI held its AGM on the 4th November at Dolau Community Centre. A report was received from the Secretary, Colette Gwynne who reported on the highlights of the year, which included carol singing with proceeds going to the charity Women’s Aid, visiting Wye Valley Lavender farm, successes in various competitions, plus meetings with many extremely interesting speakers and demonstrations.

President, Heather Lewis then made her address, thanking everyone for their hard work in all competitions. She congratulated Julie Hardwick and Chris Haslock for their excellent first places in both flower arranging and painting. Heather remarked on the fact that Dolau WI entered every class this year coming an impressive fourth overall.   Heather also thanked Colette for her excellent organisational skills, congratulated Gill on winning the poetry prose competition for the third year in a row and Debra Coombs for contributing her stitches to the centenary panel.

Heather then read out some of the comments written by those who attended the centenary cheese and wine party describing what the WI means to them. She then presented the treasurer, minutes secretary and secretary with flower bouquets and thanked them for their hard work. Stepping down as President Heather offered her best wishes to the incoming president and special thanks to Treasurer Chris Jones who has done the job diligently for 9 years and was also stepping down this year.   With a unanimous show of hands the proposal to adopt the annual report was accepted.

Officers appointed for the following year were: President – Debra Coombs, Secretary – Collette Gwynne, Minutes secretary – Gill Holt, Treasurer – Jackie Smith. Other posts filled Press Secretary – Janet Edmunds & Wendy Duggan, Raffle Organiser – Chris Jones & Competitions Organiser – Heather Lewis.

During both the AGM and November meeting some members were multi-tasking by knitting squares for a 100 square blanket – an excellent suggestion from Wendy Duggan.

The monthly meeting followed on from the AGM. The Dolau WI Quiz team had entered the Howey Annual Quiz and achieved second place out of 14 teams present.  Congratulations to team members Barbara, Jackie and Jenny on their achievement.

Colette reported on the ‘Taste of Christmas Evening’ with a fashion advisor had been extremely enjoyable. Members were reminded that the Radnor WI entertainment evening at Crossgates Community Centre will take place on 21st November with ploughman’s style dinner and punch.  Jenny, Gill and Chris H will be taking part. Carol singing in Penybont and Dolau was arranged for 14th December, commencing at 6pm.

The poppy competition was judged by Marilyn Thomas and won by Heather Lewis, second place Jackie Smith. The President Debra Coombs presented the 2015 annual competitions cup to Heather Lewis. Gill then read out her prize-winning article ‘The Beauty of Radnorshire’ which was appreciated by everyone.

Following the business meeting members enjoyed a quiz prepared by Gill Holt. The next meeting will be held on 2nd December  and  members will be treated to a demonstration on belly dancing. The January meeting will be on 6th January 2016 when Francesca Lewis will give a talk on China –  the culture, the writing plus an opportunity to taste some Chinese food. Visitors are very welcome to all meetings.
