Dolau WI Report January 2016

The last meeting of the 2015 year of Dolau WI  was held on the 2nd December when  after all the business had been discussed members were treated to a demonstration of belly dancing from the Llandrindod Wells belly dancers, who included  Dolau WI member Chris Haslock, Kate and Sue. Chris is a keen member of the belly dancing group and has already entertained Radnor WI members at the annual concert in Crossgates in November. The group were in full belly dancing tribal costume and entertained members with many dances.

Members were all then invited to have a go. Chris led us gently through some dance movements and steps and we realised just how much skill was required, not to mention muscles we hadn’t got! There was much frivolity and laughter to be heard and many photos were taken of members posing in ‘abnormal’ positions.

Julie Hardwick won the Xmas table decoration competition and we all tucked in to a delightful buffet with mulled wine, port and sherry.

The annual Christmas dinner was this year held at Llandrindod Wells Golf Club on the 5th December. The venue was ideal, to be recommended, and both WI women and men enjoyed an excellent meal and social.

On the 14th December members went Carol Singing in Penybont and Dolau villages; the evening went well and somehow we managed to escape the rain; Treasurer, Jackie confirmed we raised a total of £360. Monies will be divided between  Chris and Andy Bull (Ugandan Children’s Village) and the Wales Air Ambulance.

The first meeting of the New Year was held on 6th January when Debra Coombs , President welcomed everyone. Many items of business were discussed including the Federation County Show – Debra read out the schedule and asked for anyone interested in competing to attend a show sub-committee meeting, at The Severn Arms, later in January.

Also discussed were the NFWI Resolutions and each member voted. Members were also reminded to keep knitting the squares for the charity blanket–30 squares have been completed and 100 are needed.

The business part of the meeting was then followed by Fran Lewis from Dolau giving an interesting and enlightening talk, with overhead pictures, about China; she gave us an insight into Chinese food, people, customs, way of life and amazing sights. Fran also brought along the gifts she had been given by the Chinese students to show us. She described student life in Beijing and how different the culture is from the Western world. Members finished the evening enjoying the tasty samples of Chinese food and beer that Fran provided. The competition of an oriental item was won by Janet Edmunds.
